Waterways (2018-ongoing)
Waterways (working title) is an ongoing photographic, video, and written case study documenting the waterways of New York State and beyond through self-led trips in human-powered vessels and other watercraft, as well as long-distance trekking and cycling. The project represents an effort to gain a broader understanding of the global social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions of water.
Furthermore, it examines the role of waterways in the development of cities, regions, and bioregions from indigenous lifeways through colonial occupation to contemporary governance and resistance. Through examining the biological necessity of water, this work serves as a pathway toward understanding how access to and exclusion from water continue to shape power relationships across global landscapes.
A selection of early works from this project was featured in Kaleidoscope Magazine's FW2021 "Out There" Issue and in an online symposium organized by Spazio Maiocchi with Luigi Alberto Cippini—Architect and Curator at Fondazione Prada.
Additionally, Waterways functions as the inspiration for my Vernon C. Bain Center Archive project and continues to inform it.
